There is no single best patio heater, and any list claiming otherwise has not asked whether your patio has a roof. These six cover the real cases.

For an open patio, the Amazon Basics 46,000 BTU tower is the pick, because it is one of the very few whose published 9-foot radius survives the arithmetic. For anything with a roof, a mounted 1,500 W infrared unit beats every tower here — less output, far more of it landing on people.
Read this before the list
Every roundup in this category ranks heaters against each other as though they were competing for the same job. They are not. A 48,000 BTU propane tower and a 1,500 W infrared panel differ by a factor of ten in output and by an even larger factor in where that output goes. Ranking them one to six on a single scale is how people end up buying the wrong one.
So the ranking below is by how many patios each pick is right for, and every card says plainly which patio that is. The order is not a quality judgment. Reading the Best for column and skipping straight to the one that matches your space is the intended use of this page.

What does not
- A pyramid is a chimney. The visible flame column is beautiful and it sends heat vertically; a mushroom reflector at the same BTU puts more of it on people

What we would skip
A list with no losers is a list nobody edited. These are the choices we would actively steer you away from, and why.
Any tower bought for a covered patio
This is the most expensive mistake in the category, and it is a measurement rather than an opinion. Fire Sense publishes at least 36 inches of overhead clearance for propane. An 87-inch tower plus 36 inches is 10 ft 3 in of ceiling — more than almost any covered patio has. If there is a roof over you, buy the mounted electric unit instead.
Tabletop heaters bought to heat an area
11,000 BTU is a genuinely useful amount of warmth for one table and roughly a fifth of what an open patio needs. The listings are not lying; the photographs just show four people looking comfortable. If you want a space warmed, this is the wrong shelf.
Any electric heater with no published IP rating, mounted outdoors
One of our own picks has this problem and we say so on its card. An outdoor-mounted electric appliance with no published ingress rating is an unpriced risk: it may be fine for years, and there is no way to know from the listing. If the unit will be rained on, pay for the rating.

The decision, in three questions
- Is there a roof over the patio? If yes, you want electric, mounted overhead, and the clearance figures on the covered patio page will tell you exactly how high. If no, keep going.
- Is the spot exposed? If wind reaches it, read the wind section before choosing a fuel — an open flame in a breeze is a different product from an open flame in still air, and no propane heater escapes this.
- How big is it? Put the dimensions into the BTU calculator. If the answer is under about 6,000 BTU/h, a single electric unit does it. Above that, propane, or two electric units on two circuits.
How we picked
- Published output first. Every pick has a rated BTU/h or a rated wattage published by its maker. If a listing would not tell us how much heat the thing makes, it is not here.
- Reach computed, not quoted. Where a maker publishes a coverage claim we quote it and label it as theirs. Where none exists we compute one from the output at 20 BTU per square foot and label it as ours. We never present one as the other.
- A safety listing, or an explicit note that none is published. Two of these units publish an IP rating; one publishes only a tilt valve. We say which is which rather than letting the gap pass.
- Availability on Amazon, checked live. Every ASIN here was read off a live detail page during this build. Where we could not confirm one, the link goes to a tagged search on the model name rather than to a listing we are not sure about.
- Every unit had to be the best answer to a specific patio, not a good all-rounder. Six picks, six different patios.
What we did not do
Everyone in this category says they tested twenty heaters. We have not tested any, and we say so. What we do instead: compile the published specs, compute the electrical and gas load from them, cite the maker’s own manual, and show the arithmetic so you can check it. Common questions
Which patio heaters work best?
For open patios, propane towers in the 46,000 to 48,000 BTU range, because nothing that plugs into a household outlet comes near that output. For covered patios, pergolas and porches, mounted electric infrared units, because the roof retains the warmth a tower would lose and there is no combustion under your ceiling.
How many BTUs do I need for my patio heater?
About 20 BTU per square foot for an open patio in still air, multiplied by roughly 0.65 if there is a roof and by up to 1.4 if the spot is exposed. A 200 sq ft open patio comes to around 4,000 BTU/h, which every tower here exceeds by a wide margin. The calculator shows each step.
Are electric patio heaters any good?
For the right space, they are the better product. Infrared warms objects directly, so wind does not carry the heat away, and there is no flue gas, which is what makes them the only safe choice on a screened porch. The limitation is output: a U.S. outlet caps a plug-in heater at about 1,500 W, roughly 5,100 BTU/h.
What is the best patio heater for a windy area?
A mounted electric infrared unit. Radiant heat is unaffected by air movement and there is no flame to extinguish. If you are committed to propane, shelter matters more than model choice — the wind section covers it.
Do more BTUs mean a warmer patio?
Only up to a point, and only if the heat is aimed at you. Rated BTU is fuel consumed per hour, not warmth delivered. A pyramid heater and a mushroom heater at identical ratings feel very different because one sends much of its output vertically. Shape matters as much as the number.
