Patio heater safety, with the published numbers
Two rules do almost all the work: clearance from combustibles, and genuine ventilation for anything that burns. Here are the figures manufacturers actually publish.

Fire Sense publishes at least 36 inches of overhead clearance and 24 to 36 inches of side clearance for propane patio heaters, and about 18 inches around with 12 to 24 inches above for electric. No gas heater may be used in an enclosed space, and your own model's manual overrides any general figure.
Rule one: clearance from combustibles
Clearance is about heat reaching something that can burn or deform. It is a distance, it is published per model, and it is the number that decides whether a heater physically fits a space.

The subtraction that answers most covered-patio questions
Heater height plus required overhead clearance must be less than your ceiling height. An 87-inch propane tower plus 36 inches of clearance is 123 inches, which is a 10 ft 3 in ceiling. Standard porch ceilings are eight feet. The tower does not fit, and it does not fit by more than two feet.
That is why the covered patio page recommends mounted electric units rather than towers, and it is a measurement rather than a preference. Electric units need 12 to 24 inches above, which an eight-foot ceiling accommodates comfortably.
Rule two: ventilation, which is a different rule entirely
Clearance is about heat. Ventilation is about what combustion produces, and it is the rule that decides screened porches, gazebos and garages.
A propane or natural gas heater consumes oxygen from the air around it and produces combustion products, including carbon monoxide. Outdoors, with air moving freely, this is a non-issue and always has been. Inside an enclosure where air does not move freely, it is a genuine hazard, and it is not one you can smell or see.
There is no clever product that resolves this and no threshold we can offer you. Every manual in the category says outdoor use only, and the practical reading is: if the space has a roof and enough walls or screening that air does not move through it freely, use an electric heater. The surface underneath
Less dramatic than fire and more common. Composite decking softens and marks at temperatures well below ignition, so a fire feature or a heater with a hot base can damage a deck without anything ever catching light. A heat barrier under anything with a flame in it is cheap insurance. The wood deck page has the detail.
The other surface issue is stability. A forty-pound tower on a small base needs a level, firm surface. Grass, gravel, uneven pavers and soft decking are all reasons a heater ends up on its side. How to stop that.
The safety features on the unit, and what they do
- Thermocouple flame-failure cutoff. Holds the gas valve open only while the pilot is lit. If the flame goes out, the gas stops within seconds. This is why a heater goes out in wind, and it is the system working.
- Tip-over switch. Cuts the gas the moment the unit leaves vertical. Never bypass it. How to reset one.
- Burner screen guard. Physical barrier around the flame, and it matters most on tabletop units where the flame is at seated height.
- Ballast reservoir. Not usually described as a safety feature and it is one — a heater that does not fall over does not need the tip-over switch.
- IP rating, on electric units. Ingress protection is the specification that decides whether an outdoor-mounted electric appliance survives weather. Where a listing publishes none, treat the unit as suitable for sheltered positions only.
The routine that prevents most problems
- Leak-test whenever you connect a cylinder. Soapy water on every joint, valve open, look for bubbles. It takes ninety seconds.
- Inspect the hose each season. Cracks, perishing, kinks, crushing. Replace rather than repair.
- Keep the pilot and burner clean. Spiders nest in gas orifices, which is a documented failure in outdoor gas appliances, and a partly blocked pilot is both a reliability and a combustion issue.
- Store the cylinder outdoors, upright, valve closed. Never in a garage, a basement or a shed attached to the house.
- Cover the heater when it is cold and not in use — never while it is still warm. The storage routine.
Where our advice stops
Cleaning a pilot, replacing a thermocouple, resetting a tip-over switch and swapping a glass tube are owner jobs. A gas smell with the valve closed, a damaged regulator, a perished hose, or anything requiring work on a fixed gas line is not. Close the valve, leave the unit outside, and call a gas technician. Are patio heaters safe?
Used outdoors, with the published clearances observed and the cylinder and hose in good condition, yes. The two ways they become unsafe are predictable: too close to something combustible, and used in a space without genuine ventilation. Both are avoidable with a tape measure and a look at the sides of the space.

Are patio heaters safe in a garage?
Gas ones, no. A garage is an enclosed space, and it often contains stored fuel and vehicles. An electric heater rated for the environment is the only appropriate choice, and even then keep it well clear of anything flammable.
