Wind-resistant patio heaters
There is no wind-proof propane heater, and pretending otherwise is how this category loses people's trust. Here is what genuinely works, and why.

Electric infrared heaters are the only genuinely wind-resistant class, because radiant heat warms objects directly and moving air cannot carry it away. Every open-flame propane heater loses its convected output in a breeze and can have its flame disturbed. Mounted, aimed infrared is the answer.
Why wind beats output
A propane tower produces roughly ten times the output of a plug-in electric heater. On a still evening that is decisive. In a breeze it is much less so, and understanding why makes the rest of this page obvious.
A flame heater's output splits two ways. Some is radiant, coming off the burner housing and reflector and traveling directly to whatever is in front of it. The rest heats the air around the unit, and that warmed air is what makes a patio feel comfortable rather than just making your face warm.
Wind takes the second part away. Not reduces — takes. Warmed air on an exposed patio is replaced with cold air continuously, and the heater is then working against an unlimited supply of it. What you are left with is the radiant fraction, which is a good deal less than the number on the box.
An infrared heater has no second part to lose. Its output is essentially all radiant, so a breeze that removes most of a tower's usefulness removes almost none of its own. That is the entire argument, and it holds regardless of brand.

- A published 9 ft radius is a 254 sq ft circle, and 46,000 BTU is far more than that area needs — a claim on the conservative side of its own specification, which is rare here
- The water-fill base box is a real anti-tip measure, not a sticker: filled, it is the difference between a windy evening and a repair bill
- One-touch ignition and a chain for the cylinder are both small things the cheap clones drop

Any listing claiming a propane heater is wind-proof
No open-flame heater is. Burner shielding varies and helps, and it does not change the underlying problem: a breeze strips warmed air away as fast as the heater makes it, and the flame-failure safety system will shut the gas off if the pilot is disturbed. That system working is not a defect.
Tabletop heaters anywhere windy
A small flame on a light unit at table height is the most easily extinguished thing in the category, and the least stable. On an exposed balcony it will spend the evening going out.
Buying a second heater instead of a windbreak
This is the expensive mistake. On our sizing model, going from exposed to sheltered cuts the required output by about 36 percent — permanently, for a fraction of a heater's price. A second heater doubles your fuel bill and leaves the wind exactly as it was. Windbreaks.
If it has to be propane
Some patios have no outdoor circuit, nothing to mount to, and too much area for 5,000 BTU. That is a real situation and electric is not the answer to it, so here is how to make propane work in wind rather than pretending the problem away.
- Position it against something. A wall, a fence corner, a hedge. Shelter on the windward side does more than any feature of the heater.
- Fill the ballast reservoir. Most towers have one. Most owners have never opened it. Water or sand in the base is the difference between a windy night and a broken heater.
- Use the anchor stakes if they came in the box, and if they did not, weight the base.
- Accept a shorter effective range. In wind the useful warmth is closer to the unit, so move the chairs in rather than turning the heater up.
- Add shelter on one side even if you cannot enclose the space. Even partial windbreaks change the arithmetic substantially.
How we picked
- Mechanism first. Radiant transfer is unaffected by moving air; convected warmth is not. That single fact does most of the sorting on this page and we lead with it rather than with brands.
- Flame protection assessed from the published design — whether the burner is shielded, enclosed or open. We have not run any of these in a wind tunnel and do not claim to have.
- Stability counted as a wind property, because a heater that stays lit and falls over has not solved your problem.
- Weather rating quoted where published, since wind arrives with rain more often than not.
- One propane pick is included on merit, with an honest account of what it can and cannot do in a breeze, because for some patios electric genuinely is not an option.
What we did not do
Everyone in this category says they tested twenty heaters. We have not tested any, and we say so. What we do instead: compile the published specs, compute the electrical and gas load from them, cite the maker’s own manual, and show the arithmetic so you can check it. The honest ranking
If wind is your actual problem, the ranked answer is: block the wind first, then buy infrared, then buy propane and shelter it. Most people do that list backwards, buy a bigger flame heater, and are disappointed by it for the same reason as before.

What is the best patio heater for windy areas?
A mounted electric infrared heater. Radiant heat is unaffected by moving air and there is no flame to extinguish. If electric is not practical, shelter matters more than model — position a propane tower against a wall and fill its ballast base.
Is there such a thing as a wind-proof patio heater?
Not among flame heaters. Burner shielding varies and helps, but a breeze still strips away the convected warmth, and a disturbed pilot will trip the flame-failure cutoff. Electric infrared is the closest thing to wind-proof because it has no flame and no convected share to lose.
How much wind can a patio heater take?
Manufacturers rarely publish a figure, and we will not invent one. What is consistent across manuals is the instruction to shut a heater down and secure it in high winds. Practically, an unballasted tower is at risk long before the flame is, which is why stability is the first thing to fix.
Does a windbreak work better than a bigger heater?
