Why a pergola suits infrared so well

Radiant heat has one requirement that decides whether it works: it needs to come from above, aimed at people. On an open patio there is nothing to mount to, which is why infrared struggles there and a tower wins. A pergola solves that problem completely.

Beams at eight or nine feet are exactly the right height. They are structural, so they will actually hold a mounted appliance. And a pergola's open sides mean there is no ventilation question at all — though there is also no ventilation question for an electric heater in the first place, which is a second reason it suits.

Meanwhile the clearance arithmetic that rules towers out of covered patios rules them out here too, and more firmly: a pergola is timber, usually with planting growing over it, and 36 inches of published clearance under a wooden beam at eight feet leaves 60 inches of heater. No tower is that short.

The catch: a pergola is not a roof

Slats overhead give partial shelter. They break up wind, they retain a little warmth, and they do not stop rain. For sizing, that puts a pergola between our open and covered figures — closer to open than people expect.

Area x 20 BTU per square foot for an open patio, then multiplied by 0.65 for a roof and 0.5 for a roof plus screens, and by 1 for average exposure. The reconciliation of where each factor comes from is on this page, not hidden.

Use the open column if the pergola is bare, and something between open and covered if it has a solid canopy, dense planting or a retractable shade. A 200 sq ft bare pergola comes to about 4,000 BTU/h, which is more than one 1,500 W unit — so two units, or one unit aimed carefully at where people actually sit rather than at the whole footprint.

That last point matters more here than anywhere. Radiant heat covers what it points at, so a pergola with a defined seating group can be handled by one well-aimed unit even when the area figure says otherwise. Size for the chairs, not for the footprint.

What works

  • Infrared warms objects, not air, so it is the only heat that survives a breeze — this is the single reason wind changes the whole buying decision
  • No combustion means no flue gas, which is what makes it legal and sensible on a screened porch where propane is not
  • Three settings matter more than they sound: 900 W costs a third less to run and is enough most evenings

A propane tower under a pergola

The overhead clearance figure applies to a pergola beam exactly as it applies to a solid ceiling — 36 inches published for propane. Most pergolas sit at eight to nine feet, so an 87-inch tower does not fit. And a pergola is usually timber, often with planting on it, which is the least forgiving thing to put a flame under.

Mounting an unrated electric unit to a pergola beam

A pergola is open to the sky between the slats. A mounted unit up there gets rained on directly, which makes the published IP rating the specification that matters most. No rating published means sheltered positions only, and a pergola beam is not one.

Treating a pergola as a covered patio for sizing

Slats are not a roof. A pergola retains some warmth and considerably less than a solid ceiling does. Size it closer to the open-patio figure than the covered one, or use the covered figure and accept it will feel marginal on a cold night.

Mounting to a pergola

  1. Fix to a structural beam, not a slat. Slats are decorative and thin. The main beams are what carry the structure and what will hold a mounted heater.
  2. Seven to nine feet, angled down at the seating. If the pergola is lower than seven feet, angle becomes more important than height — aim across rather than straight down.
  3. Check the clearance to the slats above the unit. Fire Sense publishes 12 to 24 inches overhead for electric. A heater tucked up under close-set slats may not have it.
  4. Keep planting clear. Wisteria, vines and climbers grow into the clearance zone over a season. Whatever gap you leave in spring will be smaller by September.
  5. Run the circuit properly. Outdoor-rated cable, GFCI protection, and a circuit that is not shared. Surface-clipping a cable along a beam is fine if it is the right cable.

Two units beat one, usually

Pergolas tend to be rectangular and to cover a defined seating area, which is exactly the geometry where a single central heater underperforms. Two 1,500 W units at either end, each aimed inward at the chairs, cover a rectangle far better than one in the middle covering a circle.

It also doubles your output to 10,236 BTU/h, which handles a 200 sq ft bare pergola properly rather than marginally. The constraint is circuits: two 1,500 W units need two of them. The reasoning is here.

How we picked

  • Ceiling-mount capability required. A pergola's advantage is the beam overhead, and a unit that cannot hang from it wastes the advantage.
  • Weather rating weighted heavily. A pergola is not a roof — rain comes through the slats, and a mounted unit takes it.
  • Clearance checked against slat and beam depth, which is tighter than an open ceiling.
  • Output matched to a partially covered space, somewhere between the covered and open figures on our sizing model.
