The problem people actually have
Ask about heaters on decks and the conversation goes straight to fire. Fire is the dramatic outcome and the rarer one, and treating it as the only risk means people take the wrong precaution.
What happens far more often is surface damage from sustained heat. A fire pit or a heater with a hot base standing in one place for several hours transfers heat downward. Timber decking dries, discolors and eventually scorches. Composite decking, which contains plastic binders, softens and takes a permanent mark — and it does that at temperatures nowhere near ignition.
So the precaution is not primarily about fire prevention. It is a heat barrier, and it is cheap.

- A published 9 ft radius is a 254 sq ft circle, and 46,000 BTU is far more than that area needs — a claim on the conservative side of its own specification, which is rare here
- The water-fill base box is a real anti-tip measure, not a sticker: filled, it is the difference between a windy evening and a repair bill

Any fire pit directly on decking
Even a raised, stand-mounted pit transfers substantial radiant heat downward. On timber that is a scorch risk and on composite it is a deformation risk that begins well before ignition. A rated barrier under the pit is not optional. Deck-safe fire pits.
A tall tower on springy decking without ballast
Deck boards flex. A 7-foot heater on a small base, on a surface that moves when people walk past, is more likely to go over than the same unit on a slab. Fill the ballast reservoir and place it over a joist rather than mid-span.
Assuming composite decking is more heat-tolerant than wood
It is generally the opposite for this failure. Composite boards contain plastic binders that soften and mark at temperatures a long way below wood's ignition point, so you can damage a composite deck without ever coming close to a fire.
Getting the barrier right
- Size it with a margin. The mat should extend well past the footprint of whatever stands on it. Falling embers and radiant spill do not respect the outline of the pit.
- Thickness matters. A thin decorative pad looks like protection. A multi-layer insulating mat is protection. On a deck you care about, buy the thicker one.
- A stand and a mat are complements, not alternatives. A raised fire pit reduces the heat reaching the deck; it does not eliminate it. Use both.
- A barrier does not fix bad placement. It handles heat downward. It does nothing about a pit too close to a wall, under an overhang, or beside a railing.
Stability on decking
Second-order and worth a paragraph. Deck boards flex, and a tall heater on a flexing surface is less stable than the same heater on concrete. Two small things help substantially: place the base over a joist rather than mid-span, and fill the ballast reservoir.
Railings introduce their own problem, which is that a deck is usually more exposed than a patio at ground level — it is raised, and often has open sides. That is a wind exposure question rather than a deck question, and the stability page covers it properly.
Clearance still applies
A deck usually has a railing, often a wall on one side, and sometimes a pergola. Fire Sense publishes 24 to 36 inches of side clearance for propane heaters and about 18 inches for electric, and a railing is a combustible surface like any other.
If the deck is covered, the overhead figure applies too, and it is the one that rules out towers under most roofs. The clearance arithmetic is the same as for a covered patio.
How we picked
- Heat at the surface treated as the primary risk, not ignition. Composite decking deforms well below ignition temperature, which is the damage people actually report.
- Base stability weighed. Decking has give in it, and a tall heater on a springy board is less stable than the same heater on a slab.
- Mounted options preferred where a railing or wall exists, because a heater that is not standing on the deck cannot mark it.
- A heat barrier included as a pick, since it is the cheapest part of the setup and the one that decides whether the deck survives.
