Tabletop patio heaters heat a table
That is not a criticism, it is the specification. 11,000 BTU is the right amount of heat for four people around one table and a fifth of what an open patio needs.

A tabletop propane heater produces 10,000 to 11,000 BTU/h, enough to keep four people around one table comfortable and nowhere near enough to warm a patio. It is the right product for a balcony, a bistro table, or as a supplement to a tower.
The honest scale
Photographs on tabletop heater listings tend to show a group of people looking comfortable on a wide terrace. The specification says 11,000 BTU. Both are accurate about different things, and it is worth being precise about which.
At the standard 20 BTU per square foot rule, 11,000 BTU/h corresponds to about 550 sq ft on paper. That number is not wrong and it is not the right way to read a tabletop unit, because a heater 38 inches tall sitting on a table has a radiant field measured in feet, not in patio. What it genuinely does is keep the hands, arms and faces of people at that table warm. That is a real and useful thing and it is what to buy it for.
Where a table heater is the right answer
- A balcony, where a 7-foot tower would not fit and probably is not permitted.
- A bistro table for two, where the entire warm zone is the table.
- As a second heater, with a tower doing the space and the table unit doing hands. This is the setup most restaurant terraces actually run.
- Somewhere it has to be put away — a 38-inch unit on a 1 lb canister goes back in a cupboard in one trip.
The fuel arithmetic
The Hiland unit takes either a 1 lb canister or a 20 lb cylinder with an adapter hose, and the difference is large. At 11,000 BTU/h a 20 lb cylinder gives you around 39 hours of runtime, which the table below computes alongside the higher burn rates for comparison.

Cylinder energy = pounds ÷ 4.24 lb per gallon x 91,420 BTU per gallon, divided by the burn rate. A 20 lb cylinder therefore holds 4.7 gallons and 431,226 BTU. Full output only — turn it down and every figure here stretches proportionally.
A 1 lb canister holds about 21,600 BTU, so it gives roughly two hours at full output. Two hours per canister, at canister prices, is the arithmetic that sends most regular users to the adapter hose.

1 lb canisters are the most expensive propane per BTU sold. For occasional use the convenience is worth it; for regular use, buy the adapter hose and run it from a 20 lb cylinder. The hose pays for itself quickly.
A tabletop heater as your only heat source on a real patio
At 11,000 BTU it covers roughly a table's worth of area on our own arithmetic. A 150 sq ft patio needs about 3,000 BTU in still air and considerably more when exposed, so on a calm night it is arguably enough and on a cold windy one it is not. Know which evening you are buying for.
