How to stop a patio heater blowing over
Seven feet of heater, about forty pounds, on a base the size of a dinner plate. Most of them ship with the means to fix that and no instruction saying so.

Fill the ballast reservoir in the base — most towers have one and most owners never open it. Then use the anchor stakes if the unit came with them, and put the heater against a wall or in a corner rather than in the open. Those three steps handle nearly every case.
Why they fall over so easily
The shape is the problem and it is not fixable by the manufacturer. A patio heater has to be tall, because the reflector needs to be above head height to radiate down at people. It has to be light enough to move, because people move them. And the base has to be small enough not to occupy the patio.
Tall, light, small footprint, standing outdoors. That is the specification for a sail on a stick, and no amount of engineering escapes it. The manufacturers know this, which is why almost every tower includes either a hollow base you can fill or a set of anchor stakes — and why the assembly instructions mention it in one line that nobody reads.
The fixes, in order of how much they help
1. Fill the base
Most towers have a hollow reservoir in the base, sometimes called a water box or weight bladder. Filled with water it adds meaningful weight exactly where it does the most good — at the bottom, lowering the center of mass. It is free, it takes two minutes, and it is the single most effective thing on this page.
Two cautions. Water freezes and expands, so empty it before a hard freeze or it will split the reservoir. And sand is the better fill in a cold climate for exactly that reason, though it is harder to remove later.
2. Add the cylinder's weight properly
A full 20 lb cylinder weighs around 37 pounds and sits inside the base of most towers, which is a large part of why a running heater is more stable than an empty one. Make sure it is secured with the chain or strap provided — an unsecured cylinder can shift, and a shifted cylinder is both a stability problem and a gas-line problem.
This is also the reason a heater is at its most vulnerable when the cylinder is nearly empty, which tends to be a windy November evening rather than a calm one.
3. Use the anchors
Some units, including pyramid designs, ship with anchor stakes. On grass or soil they work well. On a hard surface they are useless, and the equivalent is bolting the base down — which is genuinely worth doing on a heater that lives in one place.
4. Place it against something
A heater in the middle of an open patio takes wind from every direction. The same heater in a corner, or against a wall with the required clearance, is sheltered on one or two sides. This costs nothing and it is the fix people skip because it feels like it should not matter.

5. Put it away when it is genuinely windy
Every manual says to shut down and secure a heater in high winds, and it is the one piece of advice that is completely reliable. A heater lying on its side in the morning is a repair; a heater that fell while running is a considerably worse thing. If the forecast is bad, lay it down deliberately or bring it in.

What works

If it has already fallen over
- Close the cylinder valve first, before anything else, before standing it up.
- Check the hose and regulator for damage, kinks or crushing. A damaged hose is not a repair for an owner — replace it.
- Stand it up and leave it a few minutes. The tip-over switch needs the unit fully upright to reset, and some designs need a pause. Details here.
- Leak-test before relighting. Soapy water on every joint, cylinder valve open, look for bubbles. Every time, without exception.
- Check the glass tube if it is a pyramid. A cracked tube is a replaceable part, and it is also not safe to run with.
The underlying fix
Everything above manages the symptom. The cause is that the patio is exposed, and the durable answer is to make it less so. A windbreak stops the heater falling over, stops it blowing out, and cuts the heat you need by about a third at the same time.

Should I bring my patio heater inside in winter?

Is it safe to use a patio heater in wind?
In a light breeze, with the base ballasted and the unit sheltered, generally yes. In genuinely high wind, no — every manual says to shut down and secure. A running heater that falls is a much more serious event than a stored one that does.
