How to build a patio windbreak
Two decisions decide whether it works and whether it lasts: permeable or solid, and how it is fixed. Everything else is carpentry.

Build permeable rather than solid if the position is exposed — a screen that lets some wind through sheds load and survives, while a solid panel catches everything and tears off its fixings. Fix at every attachment point, not the corners. Screen the windward side first and see whether you need more.
Decision one: solid or permeable
This is the choice that decides whether your windbreak is still standing in March, and most people get it wrong because the intuition points the other way.
A solid panel blocks wind completely, which is what you want thermally. Structurally it is a sail: the entire force of the wind on that area is transferred into the frame and the fixings. On a sheltered wall that is fine. On an exposed deck railing it is a load the railing was never designed for.
A permeable screen — slatted timber with gaps, or knitted mesh — lets a fraction of the air through. That reduces the force dramatically and, usefully, produces a longer zone of reduced wind speed downwind rather than the turbulent eddy a solid barrier creates immediately behind itself. This is why agricultural shelterbelts are planted rather than walled, and it is the same physics on a patio.
The rule
Solid where the wind is moderate and you can fix into structure. Permeable where the wind is strong or the fixing is a railing. If in doubt, permeable — a screen that survives is worth more than one that blocks perfectly for one season.
Decision two: how it is fixed
Almost every failed DIY windbreak fails at a fixing rather than in the material, and almost always for one of two reasons.
- Fixed at the corners only. The load concentrates at four points and the material tears out around them. Fix at every grommet, every 12 inches or so, so the load spreads. This is the single most common failure.
- Fixed into cladding rather than structure. Siding, fascia and trim are not structural. A screen fixed to them will pull them off. Find the posts, the joists or the framing, and fix into those.
The other detail worth getting right: leave the bottom edge free to move slightly, or tie it down properly. A screen tied at the top and loose at the bottom will flog itself to pieces in a season and keep everyone awake doing it.
Three builds, in order of effort
The one-evening version
A run of knitted mesh cable-tied to the existing railing along the windward side. Cost is trivial, effort is an hour, and it delivers most of the benefit. If you are unsure whether a windbreak is worth it, build this first and see. If it makes a difference, build something better; if it does not, you have learned that wind was not your problem for the price of a coffee.
The season version
Clear vinyl panels with grommets, hung from a tensioned wire or from hooks along a pergola beam, tied at every grommet and at the bottom. Goes up in October and comes down in April. Keeps the view, creates a genuinely still pocket, and stores flat.
The permanent version
Slatted timber screening on posts set in concrete, with roughly a 20 to 30 percent gap ratio. Permeable, structurally sound, and it looks like part of the garden rather than like weather protection. This is the version that actually gets left up, which is why it ends up being the one that works.
How much do you need?
Less than people assume, and the reason is that you are not trying to eliminate wind — you are trying to move the patio from our model's exposed category to its sheltered one, which is a 36 percent reduction in required heat.
One well-placed screen on the prevailing windward side usually does it. Two adjacent sides creates a genuine still corner and is the point at which most patios stop needing much heat at all. Three sides plus a roof is a porch, and at that point read the safety page before you use a combustion heater in it.

Sealing a space fully. A partly open, well-ventilated enclosure is the goal; an airtight one with a combustion heater inside is dangerous.

Find the wind before you build anything
Tie a light ribbon to the railing and look at it for a week of evenings. The prevailing direction on your patio is shaped by your house, your fence and your neighbor's hedge, and it is frequently not the regional prevailing wind at all.
One screen in the right place beats three in the wrong ones, and a week of watching a ribbon costs nothing. Then run the sizing calculator with the exposure setting changed and see what it does to the heat you need — that number is what the build is worth.
